With 75% of the UK grocery market controlled by just four supermarkets, and the percentage of the grocery market supplied by non-supermarkets retail negligible, any attempts to improve the food system in a local area need to confront how or whether to work with supermarkets. Can anything meaningful be done at a local level, or is it better to focus on supporting the growth of alternatives? Can local pressure help to keep new supermarkets out, or work with those that exist to improve the food they offer?
